GRI and Global Compact Index

What are the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the U.N. Global Compact?

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) was established in 1997 with the aim of developing a globally accepted framework for voluntary reporting on the economic, environmental and societal activities of organizations and companies. The guidelines were published in 2000, revised for the first time two years later and are now considered a comprehensive set of indicators covering all dimensions of sustainable development.

Since 2003, BASF has been working together with experts from industry and society in the GRI’s feedback meetings and has aligned itself with the GRI’s international guidelines. The BASF Report 2013 fulfills the requirements of the GRI G3.1 guidelines. We also have had a representative in the Global Reporting Initiative Stakeholder Council since the beginning of 2012.

In the United Nations’ Global Compact initiative, companies work together with nongovernmental organizations and international representatives from business, labor, science and politics to forge a global economy based on the principles of sustainable development. As a member of the U.N. Global Compact, we continually report on how we implement the ten Global Compact Principles in our daily business. The information in the BASF Report 2013 also serves as a progress report on BASF’s implementation of the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact and takes into consideration the Blueprint for Corporate Sustainability Leadership – an action plan initiated as part of the Global Compact LEAD platform. The Information relevant to the principles of the Global Compact symbol indicates information on the ten principles and the Blueprint for Corporate Sustainability Leadership.

This online index contains GRI reporting elements from core and additional indicators as well as topics relevant to the Global Compact Principles. It provides references to both our print and online reports. If no information is provided on a GRI indicator, we provide an explanation. In order to even further improve clarity, the GRI indicators in the BASF Online Report are shown directly on the corresponding pages.
