GC Principles

1

The total weight or volume of direct material used is not reported, as this information could be linked back to our production capacities and is therefore proprietary information.

2

The BASF Resource Verbund, i.e. the intelligent connection of production plants along our value adding chains, often makes it possible to use by-products from one plant as the raw materials for another plant. Thus, BASF saves raw materials and energy costs.

3

For our corporate mobility concept at our site in Ludwigshafen the use of company bicycles plays an important role. In total we provide there 14.000 bicycles to our employees for use on the site and for their journey to and from work. About 5.000 employees make use of the bicycles for their way to and from work. Around 12% of the employees use the public transportation system. For employees using car pools that consist of at least three people we provide special parking lots. The current corporate carbon footprint takes into account the emissions from transport of goods as well as business trips.

4

Rainwater collected and waste water from other organizations are not reported because there are not material in the context of our overall water management.

5

Size of water source not reported as it is not material to our business.

6

This indicator is only relevant to parts of our business. ( see Materiality Matrix: www.basf.com/materiality).

7

This indicator is only relevant to parts of our business. ( see Materiality Matrix: www.basf.com/materiality). The oil and gas activities are centralized in the Wintershall Group. Wintershall and its subsidiaries are conducting business in the areas of Exploration & Production and Natural Gas Trading.

8

This indicator is only relevant to parts of our business. ( see Materiality Matrix: www.basf.com/materiality).

9

This indicator is only relevant to parts of our business. ( see Materiality Matrix: www.basf.com/materiality).

10

Because of our products and business model, composting is no material disposal method for BASF. As composting does not represent significant amounts of waste, we do not report on it.

11

There have not been any significant spills in the last reporting period of 2012. In order to avoide mistakes which might lead to unexpected emissions, we check our concepts for water protection at all production sites until 2015.

12

Our specifications and measures for transportation safety include the delivery, storage and distribution of chemicals between all BASF sites, their suppliers and customers. We focus on global standards, an efficient organization and reliable partners for logistics. Our transport safety advisors are equally important. They take care of compliance of all transportations with internal, national and international regulations. If an accident occurs despite all of our preventive measures, we provide swift assistance and our transportation safety advisors subsequently evaluate all of the information. We are active in networks that provide information and assistance in case of emergency.

13

The majority of the used water is used for cooling. Only about 12% gets into contact with products. We recool the water for reducing the temperature of the cooling water before returning it into water sources.

14

Because of the BASF product portfolio this indicator has no relevance. A large part of our products is sold in bulk. Regarding used packaging material we comply with legal regulations. Besides the dual systems for recollecting packaging materials in the residential areas established e.g. in Germany and other European countries, also the return and recovery of industrial and commercial packaging is organized by take-back systems focusing on the recycling of the different fractions (plastics, steel, etc.) of the packaging material. We want to offer all our costumers an efficient, competent and responsible way for return and recovery of used packaging. Therefore, we inform them amongst other things about companies providing take-back solutions for all kind of packaging in use.

15

We primarily transport our products in bulk in ships, tank wagons or tank container by road, rail and waterways. Our works mobility concept at Ludwigshafen, our largest site, received an external award in 2006.
